University of Maryland develops 3D printed fibers for textiles

With the change of global temperature, the demand for air conditioners has become higher and higher, becoming a necessity for life. However, air conditioning is still the main cause of greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions, which are largely responsible for climate change. Therefore, the use of air conditioning can be said to be a vicious cycle, but also an expensive cycle.

According to Antarctic bears, researchers at the University of Maryland (UMCP) are working hard to develop a new textile designed to reduce the frequency of air conditioning. It is reported that this textile can be regarded as a personal cooling device without using any external energy. Recently, they published a report entitled "Three-Dimensional Printed Thermally Regulated Textiles" in the American Chemical Society's ACSNano magazine to explore the potential of 3D printing in the manufacture of high-tech textiles designed to make you feel cool.

UMCP's research is based on the development of various functional clothing, including moisture wicking training suits, deodorant sportswear and clothing that blocks UV rays through chemical coatings. Although these functional textiles are rapidly emerging, it is difficult to get people's cool clothes to develop rapidly because of the cumbersome and expensive cost of the materials, so the UMCP team is looking for a more practical solution. They combine boron nitride, a material known for its excellent heat transfer capabilities, with polyvinyl alcohol. The result is a new 3D printed nanocomposite fiber that can be woven into different types of fabric. After testing, this fiber heat absorption material is 1.5 times that of pure polyvinyl alcohol, in other words, such a Garment nanocomposites made of 3D printing allows the wearer to maintain comfort and cool, thereby reducing air conditioning Demand reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
