Tao Yunlin: The inheritor of traditional shell button making skills

Buttons are the necessary accessories on the clothes. The town of Xitang in our county has a folk craftsmanship that has been handed down from generation to generation. It is the production of traditional shell buttons. Let's get to know Tao Yunlin, the provincial representative inheritor of traditional shell button making skills in our county.

On this day, when the reporter saw Tao Yunlin, he was visiting the Xitang Button Museum. The museum has relatively complete traditional shell making tools. Many of these tools were donated by his father Tao Fuyun. Tao Yunlin told reporters that his father had personally participated in the initial construction work of the button museum and button factory in my county. His craft began to learn from his father at the age of 17.

Tao Yunlin is 60 years old and currently runs a clothing accessories company in Dalat. He told reporters that although the buttons are small and the craftsmanship is not simple, making this shell button is divided into seven processes, and blanking is the first, and the materials are many. It is made of raw materials such as sea shells and river rafts.

Tao Yunlin's current use of button making tools is the most traditional. Not only does he need to step on the foot to make the tool work, but also requires manual control and hands and feet, which require considerable proficiency. After blanking, the second step is to grind the surface and use a tool equipped with a grinding wheel to grind the surface of the dropped button blank. Next is the shape, which is to grind the edges, grooves and other shapes on the rough surface.

Tao Yunlin introduced the clips to clamp the buttons and then pushed the turning tool. The groove of the turning tool determines the shape of the buttons. There are holes in the button, and the holes can fix the buttons on the clothes. The tool for drilling holes is called a blind car. Hold the button through the fixture and manually turn the eyebolt to make a hole. However, this operation is only a preliminary completion of a button, followed by peeling, bleaching, polishing and other processes. Tao Yunlin said that as long as the polished, dried, basically can be packaged and sold. When his father first started doing it, he operated by hand. When he studied, in fact, many of them had already used electricity, and they accelerated a lot.

Tao Yunlin said that he just started making buttons for other people and earning more than 20 yuan a month. By the 1980s he had opened a home workshop to produce shell buttons. After decades of hard work, the original small workshops have become large corporations. Tao Yunlin said that in the past, their buttons were all made of shells, and they are now made of various materials, such as metal and plexiglass. The production process is also more convenient, and it is basically mechanized by conveying and grinding through the conveyor belt.

Tao Yunlin said that technology is constantly being updated, but now the equipment is also being transformed according to the original tools. It is the crystallization of the wisdom and sweat of the working people. It is hoped that such a traditional production process can be inherited from generation to generation.
